The worst thing that ever happened to Phish is they were labeled a Jam Band. Jam Band, to me, evokes the idea of improvisation. Phish never did a ton of improvised playing.

Phish would be better labeled an Arrangement Band. They create highly technical arrangements and the challenge is to play these arrangements in the live setting. A far-cry from what the GD did with open-ended tunes which were specifically designed to allow the musicians to explore.

High-Hurdles vs. Without A Net(When that album was released my buddy asked, "Who is Annette?")

I think GD fans have a difficulty connecting with Phish due in large part to this misconception.
